New Shop Exclusives

Have you met our latest additions to the Purl Diver Collection?

Midnight Pass is an intriguing shaded solid dyed exclusively for us by MadelineTosh.  Available in Tosh Sock, Tosh Merino DK, Tosh Vintage and Tosh Chunky both online and in-store, we know you’ll fall in love once you get to know our latest colorway!

For those of you familiar with the Purl Diver collection, you know that our colorways  are typically inspired by the underwater photography of my husband, Murray Post.  This particular colorway has a bit of a different story:

From the water, looking towards the shore at Midnight Pass gives rise to a wonderful panorama. As the sun begins to lower in the early evening the water takes on a magnificent blend of blues and turquoises. These are the colors you see in our new exclusive colorway we’ve named Midnight Pass.  To read the rest of this colorway’s story (and to enhance your stash a little bit, too!), click here.

image titleSea Urchin is our next exciting new multicolor, dyed just for us by Three Irish Girls.  It was inspired by Murray’s photograph (below) of a Long Spined Sea Urchin taken in the waters of the Fiji Islands in the South Pacific.  We think Sharon did a fantastic job of capturing these colors in one of our favorite 3IG bases, Adorn Sock.

Sea Urchins usually hide in crevices during the day, coming out to feed at night. They have extremely sharp spines that can crumble if they penetrate into the skin – sounds painful, doesn’t it? Though they aren’t warm and cuddly, Sea Urchins are important to the life of a reef.  Their favorite food is algae; their midnight snacking keeps the algae population in check, allowing coral to flourish.

You can snag an urchin of your own and learn more about these interesting creatures by clicking here!

Thankful

A good time at A Good Yarn. Click to see more photos from our celebration.

‘Tis the week to be thankful. Not that we can’t be thankful each and every day, but Thanksgiving makes us shine a light on all that we have. As I pass the milestone of two years in business, I am especially thankful for getting to know the wonderful knitters who come in the shop on a daily basis. Being surrounded by beautiful colors and fibers makes it a pleasure to walk in the door everyday. I smile just thinking about it. I am also thankful for our wonderful staff. Their knowledge, dedication, and humor make it all possible.

In the year ahead, I’m looking forward to sharing more and more new techniques with my customers. I have some wonderful designers and instructors scheduled including the irreverent John Brinegar, who has taught at Voge Knitting Live, and the intrepid Nora Bellow of Noni Designs. We also have a CoCo Knits and Habu Textiles trunk shows coming up. I am particularly excited to have spinners in the shop. Look for more classes and fibers! Check in regularly with the website’s events page and Facebook to get up to the minute information.

On a personal note, this year has had its challenges and having the community of my yarn shop has meant the world to me.  Thank you for being a part of it.

Knit on!

Happy Happy Joy Joy!

Come Celebrate with Us!So much to celebrate! This week famed knitwear designer, author and teacher, Melissa Leapman is teaching and we turn two! When I first learned to knit I was so happy to crank out garter stitch scarves–still am really. Now I’m ready for whatever challenge comes my way. No matter what your level of knitting or crochet expertise you are going to love getting to know this member of the kniterati! Making Yarn From Scratch

Handspun Yarn

It is so much fun to show off our new spinning wheels! We carry three wheels from Schacht, the cute Ladybug, the foldable Sidekick, and the matchless Matchless. The idea of making yarn from this glorious stash of fibers we have in our shop is irresistible. The fact that I get the opportunity to pick the exact fiber content I want—even down to the breed of sheep—in an enticing colorway and let it run though my hands is thrilling.  I love designing knits, so why not design my yarn? Some of you have asked, why spin?  Here are the reasons why we wanted to bring spinning into the shop:

  • Your yarn is unique—no one else’s will look like yours.
  • You have control—color, texture, thickness, content, yardage, design, etc. . .
  • You get a new toy—a spinning wheel is such a joy and a conversation starter.  You think two needles attract attention!
  • Your knitting becomes even more satisfying—knitting with your own handspun is such a treat.
  • Most of all, you get to feel incredibly clever!

Don’t worry if your handspun isn’t perfect at first.  Lots of knitters want their handspun to look exactly like the yarn they have in their knitting basket—mine sure doesn’t.  Pretty soon you are going to try and make that first lumpy, bumpy yarn.  Think of Pagewood Farms Handspun Bouquet or even Manos—you can do that!

Wondering what to do with that first bit of beginners yarn?  Here is a free pattern from Schacht for a lace collar.  Lace is a wonderful way to use that yarn as it really shows it off.
-Submitted by Heidi Lawrence

Give us a call (941.487.7914) to see when Heidi will be around next time or just pop on in and take a look at our new spinning area.  We can’t wait to see what you knit with your first handspun.

You can also sign up for A Sheep is a Sheep, Heidi’s upcoming class about various sheep breeds, by clicking here.

Ladybug Love

Excited doesn’t really cover our feelings about introducing spinning to our shop.  To quote Ann Budd from her blog, “I just can’t get over how clever I feel when I make yarn out of a pile of fluff.”

Our spinning teacher, Heidi Lawrence, and I went poking around for a wheel to bring into the shop to help you feel clever, too.  When we saw the Ladybug from Schacht Spindle it was love at first sight.

Clever, modern, easy to move around, complete with all the bells and whistles, and affordable!

We asked Liz Gipson, former Sales and Marketing Director at Schacht to give you a brief introduction to this wheel.  Liz was the spinning and weaving host of Knitting Daily TV for its first three seasons, so she knows what knitters need to get spinning. Here is what Liz had to say about the Ladybug spinning wheel:

  • Easy to use.  A double treadle, castle-style wheel that is very approachable to the novice.  The Ladybug really is a plug and play wheel.
  • Highly versatile. If you could only have one wheel your whole life, this wheel would be a good choice. It offers a wide array of ratios, from 4.25-15.25.  (“Huh?” You say.  A ratio determines how much twist goes into a yarn, low numbers mean low twist, high numbers mean twist.) There is also a bulky flyer available for making art yarns.
  • Makes a good travel wheel. While it doesn’t fold, at 13 ½ pounds, the Ladybug is light enough to move around easily. It comes with two built-in handles, making it easy to grab and go.  There is a built-in Kate available that makes it easy to store your bobbins and ply on the go.
  • Good price point.  You aren’t going to find a much better value than the Ladybug.  It has all of the quality craftsmanship you would expect from Schacht, but at an affordable price.

You really need to get in here and try this wheel.  And, if you buy one from us, you’ll also get a free class with Heidi. Not sure? Stop by on October 27th from 4:00-5:00pm and let Heidi give you a FREE tour of all the new wheels we have in stock. Class is free, but limited so please call 941.487.7914 to sign up (click here for more information on this event!) We also have a wide array of fibers to help you feel as clever as Ann Budd.  Oh, and since we are a Schacht dealer, if you want anything they make we’re more than happy to order it for you.

See how clever we are!

Gill’s Night Out!

This third colorway in our Purl Diver Collection is based on a picture I took while diving with my son Michael in the Solomon Islands, of a pair of Dusky Nembrotha Nudibranchs. Nudibranchs are mollusks which in the course of evolution have lost their shell because they have developed other defense mechanisms. They include some of the most colorful creatures on earth. Some species evolved an external anatomy with textures and colors that mimicked surrounding plants to avoid predators. Others use their colors to warn predators of their bad taste or poisonous nature. The word “nudibranch” comes from the Latin nudus, naked, and the Greek brankhia, gills. On the head of the Nudibranch are sensitive tentacles that can register touch, smell and taste. As mentioned above, the Nudibranch has naked gills. The Nudibranch breathes via bushy extremities that are found on the back of the body. Nudibranchs are hermaphroditic and contain both male and female sex organs. If you look closely, you will see these two are mating!

One of most exciting things about diving is seeing so many unusual and colorful creatures, both large and small. The majority of Nudibranchs are no bigger than a quarter. Some are so small you don’t really know what they look like until the picture is enlarged. They are usually well camouflaged and well hidden. I’m always excited to find a new species, and Susan and I agreed it would be a great inspiration for a new colorway. So did Sharon McMahon from Three Irish Girls. She has again done an awesome job.

TAHKI COTTON CLASSIC

When I first opened the shop, I debated  back and forth on whether or not I would bring in Tahki Cotton Classic. I had worked with it on many projects and loved it. There were so many cottons to pick from, I thought I’d try something new. Now don’t get me wrong, I love all of the cottons I have brought in.  However, Amy convinced me that we should carry Cotton Classic and now we do. The classic DK weight yarn in the highest quality 100% mercerized cotton. Often imitated, but never duplicated. Great for year-round garments. Offered in over 125 vibrant, long-lasting shades, A Good Yarn now has over forty with more to come. There are so many projects you make with Cotton Classic.

Stop in and see what’s new with Cotton Classic. It’s a great crochet yarn too. In fact, we are recommending it for our very first Crochet Mystery Monday which starts tomorrow morning.

Purl Diver Yarn for Everyone!

Even though snow is the forecast for our friends up North (and the South, too! Can you believe snow is currently on the ground in 49 states?!), you can now keep the beach close by! We recently launched our online shopping cart featuring all four colorways from our Purl Diver Collection.  Maybe you want to take a swim in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, feel the sand between your toes on A Good Beach, dive down to catch a glimpse of an Octopus’ Garden or see some clown fish around a Sea Flower.  Whatever your tropical paradise, you can now be reminded of it with every stitch.

And once you’ve finished your project, every time you slip on your hat made of Gulf of Mexico and your gloves made of Octopus’ Garden, you’ll be transported to sunny Sarasota and away from the freezing temps!

We can’t wait to start shipping out our yarn and see where it goes! Can we make it to Alaska?!
